Reflection - This week we were looking at Illustration in more depth and being related to UI design. It is a massive part of the interface that can be used to increase accessibility as Illustration can be used to show the use of an option easily and quickly as they limit the time required to read. They also make in a lot more of an interesting interface creating a better user experience.
When including illustrations you have to make sure it doesn't need to be clarified, when you remove them from the app people still understand what their use is. They also have to be consistent throughout the interface so that they make sense to the user.
The main reason that illustrations should be included is that they are visual cues and show the user how to use their product by breaking it down below is Uber's explanation of how their app works. It helped break it down so that it is understood and clear to the user, it also feels more human in comparison to the written explanation.
Illustrations don't have to be very realistic to be seen as more approached as a more exaggerated style can make a person more relaxed and more likely to use your app, that also comes down to the aesthetics of your Illustrations making it more visually interesting and fun.
These illustrations are by Outcrowd that is a brand visual agency that helps startups achieve their business goals, the illustrations they have created for this brand are so cute and interesting. It creates a lot more visual interest and depth in the app. The style is a lot looser and hand-drawn than illustrations like Uber which creates this much more human and friendlier atmosphere, the use of colour is also quite interesting with the limited colour palette that is also tied into the app colours but used really effectively to add a really nice level of contrast especially with the pops of yellow.
