We didn't have class this week instead we had talk by Alex McDowell who is a lecturer teaching about world-building but started as a world-builder for movies most notably Minority Report which went on to make lots of predictions like gesture interfaces, robotic surveillance, targeted ads… he was able to make a lot of predicts by using what was currently available and where it would take us and the world it creates.
He uses generational knowledge like oral tradition and Western transitions to world build from as they are deeply researched and explored, which results in them building themselves and creating a new platform. He builds a whole ecosystem and displays them through a mandala which is an emotional connection to people.
The most important thing to world-building is having empathy to grow an understanding of everyone and everything that will be in this world and without empathy, you don't understand them or the world as a whole.
This talk was really fascinating to listen to as you listen you understand that he's open to it all current, past, and future, and where this will/could lead us. This is the way storytelling has evolved and he uses stories and everyones connections to build a world.
