Reflection - We began this class with a task to Identify the features of the font with the technological names. I used the name of my bank as the example with one of the fonts I am considering. I enjoyed this task as it got me to consider the anatomy of the text, as I am very used to just looking at the already-created version and not fully taking it in. So I found this task effective and useful, I can see how I will apply this to my own wordmark. As a result, I learned a lot of the names of the anatomy.
In class, we talked about the ability to maniple words and letters to create effective word marks as they are interesting, fun, and eye-catching making them recognisable. A great way to create your own is to simply look at what is already there, like in HBO they have negative space in some of the letters to make it fun. It is all about building from what is there.
Afterward, we looked at word marks and were shown examples in class. So I found some of my own that interested me. Like this ‘arch’ wordmark by Kanhaiya Sharma who is an Indian Designer who is interested in logo designs, UX designs, and brand building. I like this design very simple and effective especially with the use of negative space on either side, creating a brilliant and seamless design. The effect of connecting the letters and the cutout area of both makes this an incredibly effective word mark.

This is by Samadara Ginige, who is a Professional Logo and Brand Identity Designer and has been in the industry since 2012 from then on has developed much further as a designer even winning awards for logo work. I like this design it's very simple whilst being very dramatic with the l looking like it is knocking down the I at the same time but it makes it really effective and playful for the word slide.
We discussed in class that it is all about working with what you have and that kerning is an easy way of doing that, which is the space between each letter, making it balanced, and flowing, and how it can also be used to create a simply effective word mark. We then were shown the Kerntype website again, we were shown this last semester. It's a good way of testing your skills and playing with the kerning of the words.
We were given the task of creating our own word mark for each word, I liked this task as it really got me thinking and looking at what you can manipulate in each. It was also really fascinating to see what everyone else does with the same words. At times I started to overcomplicate the words and what I could do with them but often the simpler approach was the better one reflect, I started to create overly complicated word marks and in the end, I just did a very simple negative cut out which is a better word mark.
