Reflection on the class - I really enjoyed this lecture I found it really interesting and has helped me look at this project differently. When looking at creating the future it's important to remember what will be the future and what is possible and finding the middle ground is where the best designs come from. We have to approach all designs and projects speculatively to create something great.

At the end of class, there was a task that involved creating a new type of classroom to encourage collaboration as working from home becomes more popular. This was a fun task that got us to think about what's currently available and push it further.

Speculative Everything

Speculative Everything is a book that discusses how designs establish themselves and evolve into what we know and use. The book talks about how dreaming about something can create a solution, our ability to be creative has helped us grow and develop into the world we have today.

‘We are interested in the idea of possible futures and using them as tools to better understand the present and to discuss the kind of future people want, and of course, ones people do not want.’ I thought this line from the book was interesting because it talks about the creativity and potential that everyone has even if they don't realize it, you just have to read between the lines and the future is there.

‘The challenge is to keep evolving techniques that are appropriate to the times and identifying topics that need to be highlighted, reflected on, or challenged’ Speculation is something that is necessary and has to be constantly worked on which is why designing kinda never ends and no project is finished.

Have we stopped dreaming?

When looking at articles about Speculative design I came across this article by Sarah called ‘Have We Stopped Dreaming?’ she discusses the reduced creatively and ability to dream that everyone is experiencing, she talks about Speculative Everything opinion that designers no longer dream big and only dream about what's probable, she disagrees with this idea as the things we dreamed are now becoming reality and achievable.

She talks about how the book states that as designs become more aligned with capitalist ideas they start to hinder ideas. She believes that these are just new guidelines to work with and that we are currently still dreaming up the future, they are different ways of dreaming and are no longer problem-solving so they will be different but that doesn't mean that we have stopped.

Reflection on my research - I thought it was interesting the opinions that people have about dreaming on one side the belief that we have stopped dreaming and on the other that we just do it differently now. I’m in between the two beliefs as I think that we have lost a lot of creativity and that's due to social media and AI but we still can dream tho it does require a lot more effort and consideration.
