In week 1, we were taught about the basics of designs and then given the task of creating 9 sketches each of point, line, and plane, that were restricted and limited with the number of components in each. After completing them on paper, I transferred them to Figma to create a more refined version.

Point - The point is an incredibly common shape that can be used to display ‘an insignificant fleck of matter or a concentrated locus of power’ It is an incredibly powerful tool that can have a widespread impact. Like this book cover from the Graphic Designer Walter Diethelm, Visual Transformation. The points show the change comes over the points as the sizes change, like a wave.

Line - can easily be used to connect the image creating a flowing design and or cutting the design to make a point, eyes follow a line typically from left to right and therefore it can easily be used to make a statement. This a poster by Josef Müller-Brockmann in 2012, it draws the eye along the poster with purposeful gaps making you track it up and down as you move along it.

Plane - ‘A plane is a flat surface extending in height and width.’ It is a shape that creates an atmosphere by building areas and blocking off others. It works well with different tones, tricking the eye by making it all appear very 3D. This poster by Albert Exergian is a great example of how places and limited colors can jump off the page at you by keeping it limited.

This class explained the basics of basic with point, line, and plane, and the multiple ways they can all be used to create very different designs. It has helped me have a fuller understanding of the basics which I will be able to improve and apply to my designs.
