Reflection on the class - This first class covers what we are meant to be doing this semester, we will be focusing looks on research.
This project is a very broad area with lots of interesting opportunities, I'm glad this project is 12 weeks long as there are so many ways to take it. This project will require a lot of research which is why we were put into groups to do it together, I think this will be really interesting to see the results as everyone researches differently and will all start to look at specific areas.

The Double Diamond is a visual representation of the design and innovation process. It breaks it down into steps, that can easily be explained to others. There are 4 main areas to the design process.

I came across this article by Eduardo Hernandez that was published in the UX Collective called ‘Death to the Double Diamond’ In it he talks about two extremes that you can take with the design process. One is taking the same steps every time in the design process and approaching it the same way, two there is no predictable path to solving a problem because you are reacting and responding to all the things you don't expect. In the end, what makes a difference to the outcome the most is the amount of control you have over each area.
These two types of processes create problems and there are different ways to solve them.
Prescriptive ‘beforehand, you can apply a known process with steps that have been proven to work in order to solve the problem’ It's about taking steps to be effective that create a predictable result.
Designers work on areas that are unpredictable as they are real-life problems so there is no way to map the process. That's what the Double Diamond does it plans out the steps, there is no right way to solve problems, and the Double Diamond steps will get you no closer to solving it.
‘Doing the double diamond lacks purpose, continuity, and context because the designer isn’t reacting to the unexpected and emerging questions or situations they find themselves in rather the double diamond offers answers to questions designers often don’t have.’
‘Emergent strategy is more about finding ways to address the unpredictable challenges and situations that you encounter along the way.’ it is all about adapting, learning, and experimenting.
