What is an SDG?

They are the Sustainable Development Goals that were from the agenda for 2030 and were adopted by all the UN member states in 2015. The overall goal idea was to create a blueprint for peace and prosperity for the rest of the world establishing it now and for the future. They represent all the countries developing or not to all work together, they emphasize ending poverty, equal health and education, reducing inequality, and pushing economic growth while still protecting the environment. These goals came from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

More of the history behind the SDGs is in 1992 the Agenda 21 plan for sustainable development was introduced, and in 2000 there were 8 Millennium Development Goals to reduce poverty, 2002 The Johannesburg Declaration was to reduce poverty, protect the environment, and do this in partnerships. All of these goals and targets set by different groups painted the picture of the world they wanted to make so then in 2012 they started developing the SDGs as goals that could be followed by all, and by 2015 they had the goals fully outlined.

They have created these progress reports to show how the goals are getting on. The 2024 report does not have good news it shows that the world is really off track for achieving these goals with only 17% of them expected to achieve them, 48% being severely off track, and 17% having regressed from the 2015 base levels.

I started looking at some of the area's goals and how they increased and decreased. They believe that COVID was a major cause of the setbacks which was seen to increase poverty in 2020 which hasn't been seen in decades, so countries have begun to bounce back but lower-income countries are not recovering as quickly. In 2022 9% of the world is in extreme poverty which means that by 2030 6.9% will still be in extreme poverty.

The impact of COVID has also been seen in world hunger, with 122 million more people hungry in 2022 than in 2019, maternal mortality has lowered slightly with 227 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2015 to 223 in 2020, and safe drinking water has increased from 2015 being 69% and 2022 73% so not very much.

Why redesign?

These goals have been pushed to the side as world events have happened and it is time to make people aware of them again. They are something that is talked about in geography in school, I remember being taught about them when I was 14 but there is a real opportunity to teach them to the older and younger generations as they are often forgotten about. This will bring them back into people's awareness making real change.

Age Target

10-year-old or undergraduates is the age demographic that I have the choice of picking from. I did a quick mind map to understand the areas of interest for each age group.

I have decided to design it for a 10-year-old group as I think there are so many opportunities.

The age groups have different areas of interest and points of contact but they need to be designed differently for as well.

The kid's designed product will have to have these considerations.
