Point
After learning about the different uses of point, I began look at how others think about it and its uses, In the book Graphic Design: The New Basics it says ‘A point marks a position in space.’ and ‘Through its scale, position, and relationship to its surroundings, a point can express its own identity or melt into the crowd.’ describing that a point can be a very powerful tool with all the different uses.
I looked at Albert Exergian’s work and the company founded by the man with the same name in Austria in 1998, he is known for very simplistic designs with the common theme of Point, Line, and Plane, here is some of his work that is mostly made up of points, to create Tv posters that is a personal project of his. I really like the effectiveness of the simple shapes along with the limited colour palette.
These are some photos I took of different points that I noticed. The one below really inspired me when it came to the word Disperse.
Line
‘A line is an infinite series of points.’ and ‘A line is the connection between two points, or it is the path of a moving point. A line can be a positive mark or a negative gap.’ This is some of what’s said in Graphic Design: The New Basics about line.
These are some designs by Ross Gunter, who has 15 years of experience and owns a design company in London. These designs are largely made up of lines but with some other shapes are very interesting, they draw you to the images and also the written information making them very effective designs.
Here are some images I took of lines, in poles, and electrical wire that inspired me, and also clock hands that interested me.
Plane
Graphic Design: The New Basics said this about plane ‘A plane is a flat surface extending in height and width.’ and ‘A line closes to become a shape, a bounded plane. Shapes are planes with edges.’
Rokas Aleliunas is a Freelance Designer that has been working for over 5 years who created these pieces. Using planes with different colours and tones to create posters with depth and character.
After doing my research on point, line, and plane. I did the ruff sketches of my ideas, the first point sketches is disperse which I based on the idea of a crowd leaving, the second point one is based on multiplying and things growing, and my first line idea was based on frequency and waves moving along with there intensity, the second idea of the line was based on rhythm and the hands of a clock showing the passing of time and my plane was based on the sequence of sizes of planes the first two are using the size of frame divide by 5 to create the different planes and then the other three are based on the Fibonacci sequence for the sizes of planes.
